Shipley founded GIA and opened the first gemology course in September 1930 in Los Angeles, USA. His goal is to create public confidence in the jewelry business by training “Certified” Jewelers and Certified Gemologists. The first gemology and gemological testing certificates were issued by Robert M. Shipley in 1934. His idea was to grow the "seed" for GIA and transform the gem industry. and jewelry in the United States and around the world.
