The most valuable gems on the planet are fancy color diamonds .

There is only 1 'fancy color diamond' out of 10,000 diamonds.

In April 2017, the 59.60 carat 'Pink Star Diamond' diamond became the most expensive gem ever at auction. The 45.52 carat 'Fancy Deep grayish blue Hope Diamond' is the most famous gemstone in the world.

According to GIA's 4Cs , 'colorless diamonds' with color grade from D - Z gradually decrease in value as more color is contaminated.

In contrast, the value of 'fancy color diamonds' increases with the strength and purity of the color. Large, brightly colored diamonds are rare and very valuable.

Sky-high prices in auctions are a factor in raising awareness of fancy colored diamonds. However, not all fancy colored diamonds cost this much. Dark yellows and browns are often less valuable than other fancy colors.

In the 1980s, the Argyle mine in Australia began to market brown diamonds under trade names such as “Champagne Diamond” and “Cognac Diamond”. Today, the Argyle mine offers not only 'Brown Diamonds', but is also the most famous source of the main rare 'Pink Diamond' in the world.
